Intellectual Property Management
CIAT is an international agricultural research center that aims to use its scientific competencies to reduce hunger and enhance nutrition in the tropics. In pursuit of this objective, CIAT seeks to use Intellectual Property as a tool to make its work as widely available as possible and facilitate its use to help poor farmers in the tropics.
In 2001, CIAT adopted an Intellectual Property Rights Policy that reflects our values and addressed some emerging challenges in this area. Since 2001, CIAT has sought to augment its IP capabilities and strengthen its response to an increasingly sophisticated international legal framework that governs the exchange of germplasm and knowledge in the agricultural sector. In April 2010, CIAT adopted the Open Access Policy, clearing the way for a clear strategy to provide wide and easy access to media and publications generated by CIAT scientists and employees.
Intellectual Property and Technology Office In October 2009, CIAT established an Intellectual Property and Technology office to provide the requisite IP and legal support services for its strong research and development capabilities.
The IP office provides essential vision, training, legal support, and backstopping services to CIAT scientists in IP management. The IP office also seeks to provide guidance and leadership in the area of IP management to CIAT's partners across the world, and particularly in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.
