Library Loans

The CIAT Library offers loan services for books, documents, and other bibliographic materials, held in its General Collection.

Lending policies

The right to a loan
Persons connected with CIAT and Colombian institutions with whom the CIAT Library has an inter-library loan agreement have the right to use this service.

Materials that may be borrowed
Any book of the Library’s General Collection may be borrowed for a maximum of 30 days, with the possibility of renewing the loan when the borrowed book has not been reserved for another user. Materials found in the Reference Collection can be consulted only in the Library. These materials include reference books; journals; serial monographs; documents belonging to the specialized collections on cassava, beans, and tropical pastures; audiovisuals and audiotutorials; electronic documents; and maps. Only under exceptional circumstances will these materials be given on loan, and then only for a few hours up to one day.

Number of documents that may be borrowed
CIAT employees may borrow up to 20 books. CIAT thesis students and visiting scientists may borrow up to 5 books. Institutions having an inter-library loan agreement with the CIAT Library may borrow up to 2 books.

Requirements for borrowing
All loans are processed through the Circulation Desk located at the Library entrance. For every loan, the user must present his or her current CIAT ID card. All loans must be signed by the cardholder. CIAT ID cards presented through third parties can be received according to the following procedure: the loan is first registered, and a form for signing is sent to the cardholder. When the completed and signed form is received, the material to be borrowed will be delivered.

Reminders for return
About every 3 months reminders will be sent for expired loans.

Note: The Library loan application does NOT permit the loan of books to users with expired loans.
