Evaluation of CIATs First Computer Supported Collaborative
Learning Venture
An evaluation of CIATs first computer supported collaborative
learning (CSCL) venture Ex-situ conservation
of plant genetic resources has recently been finalized
with very encouraging results. The evaluation study focused
on the effectiveness of the course for socializing concepts
and methods in the field of conservation, but also on partnership
processes, and aspects of institutional learning and change.
An executive summary of the evaluation report is attached
and the full report will soon be made available as well.

summary of the evaluation report (114 kb).
Distance-based Course on Integrated Water Resources Management
A Regional Center has been established at the Asian Institute
of Technology (AIT) to offer distance-based course on Integrated
Water Resources Management (IWRM) under the UN Water Virtual
Learning Centre (WVLC) Program in collaboration with the UNU
International Network on Water, Environment and Health (INWEH),
Canada, and with support from UN Department of Economic and
Social Affairs (UN-DESA).
The intent of the program is to provide training in Integrated
Water Resources Management, through a core curriculum in distance
learning. AIT currently invites applications from water related
professionals to join this distance-based course in IWRM that
leads to the award of UNU diploma in IWRM.

E-Learning
Course on Germplasm Conservation
A
new multi-institutional distance education course on ex situ
conservation of plant genetic resources has proved to be an
exciting learning experience, not just for participants, but
for the staff conducting the course. Launched in August of
this year, the pilot learning venture was developed jointly
by CIAT, the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute
(Bioversity
International), Colombia's
National University in Palmira, and REDCAPA,
an e-learning provider with over 10 years of experience. The
course employs a Web-based method called computer-supported
collaborative learning, which allows busy professionals to
organize their participation in the course around other activities.
Participants log into the work space, download documents related
to course assignments, upload the work completed, and communicate
with fellow students and tutors via e-mail.
A preliminary report on lessons learned from this experience
is available at www.ciat.cgiar.org/inforcom/pdf/ex_situ_report.pdf
