Regional consultation
on the future of agriculture for
Latin America and the Caribbean
Representatives from the agricultural research sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) met at CIAT on 19 and 20 October to participate in the Regional Consultation on Agricultural Research for Development for LAC. This consultation formed the basis of what is presented at the Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) to be held in March 2010 in Montpellier, France.
The event was convened by the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR)
and the Forum for the Americas on Agricultural Research and Technology
Development (Foragro),
as part of the GCARD
2010 process. The Cooperative Program for Technological Development
in Agrifood and Agroindustry in the Southern Cone (Procisur)
and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA),
in particular its Uruguay office, were also co-organizers of this event.
More than 60 participants from LAC's public and private sectors confirmed
their attendance to this historic event for the Center, which was facilitated
by CIAT's Simone Staiger. The agenda included two conferences offered
by Dr Jacky Ganry of GFAR, who addressed the trends and transformations
of agricultural research and innovation worldwide. Also, CIAT's Director
General Ruben Echeverría will spoke about the "megaprogram"
proposal for CGIAR centers.
"This is an excellent opportunity to continue with the process of repositioning CIAT in the region, while strengthening the relationships with key partners and actors," explained Dr. Echeverría. "It is also an excellent opportunity for CIAT to actively participate in the joint construction of LAC's contribution to regional agricultural research-for-development", he added.
Participants included directors of national and international agricultural
research institutes, representatives of universities and the governmental
sector, and representatives of farmers associations, NGOs and private
sector.
Consulta regional que define futuro agrícola de América Latina y el Caribe
El sector más representativo de la investigación agropecuaria en la región latinoamericana se reunió en el CIAT el 19 y 20 de octubre, para llevar a cabo la Consulta Regional en América Latina y el Caribe sobre Investigación Agropecuaria para el Desarrollo. Esta consulta regional sentó bases para presentarlas ante la Conferencia Global que se realizará en marzo de 2010 en Montpellier, Francia.
El encuentro fue convocado por el Foro Global de Investigación Agropecuaria (GFAR, sus siglas en inglés) y el Foro de las Américas para la Investigación y el Desarrollo Tecnológico Agropecuario (Foragro), y forma parte del proceso GCARD 2010 (Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development). En la organización también tomaron parte el Programa Cooperativo para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Agroalimentario y Agroindustrial del Cono Sur (Procisur) y el Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), en especial su oficina en el Uruguay.
Alrededor de 60 funcionarios del sector público y privado de América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) confirmaron su asistencia a este taller, que fue facilitado por Simone Staiger, del CIAT. La agenda contempló dos conferencias, una a cargo de Jacky Ganry, de GFAR, quien se referió a las tendencias y transformaciones de la investigación/innovación agrícola a nivel mundial, y la otra estuvo a cargo de Ruben G. Echeverría, Director General del CIAT, quien en representación del CGIAR habló sobre la propuesta de los megaproyectos para los centros internacionales.
En este encuentro, que es histórico para el CIAT como anfitrión, se debatió el futuro agrícola de ALC. "Es una oportunidad para continuar con el proceso de reinserción del CIAT en la región, al tiempo que fortalecerá las relaciones con socios y actores clave", dijo Echeverría. "Para el CIAT también es una excelente ocasión para participar activamente en la construcción conjunta del aporte de ALC a la investigación agrícola para el desarrollo regional", agregó.
Entre los asistentes figuraron jefes de institutos nacionales de investigación agrícola, representantes de universidades, representantes del sector gubernamental, representantes de asociaciones de agricultores, ONG y el sector privado.
