Optimize genetic diversity for multipurpose use, improve the livelihoods of poor rural livestock communities, and contribute to greater access by poor urban consumers to safe, high-quality animal products by strengthening forage-based feeding systems and taking advantage of the potential of forages to enhance natural resource management and provide environmental services.

New On-line Tool: Tropical Forages

This powerful package, available as a Web site, provides:

  • Accumulated information on the adaptation, use, and management of about 185 tropical and subtropical forage species, cultivars, and elite accessions. The information is presented as facts sheets, which come with color photos and maps, a glossary of botanical and management terms, and a comprehensive database of scientific references with abstracts.

  • A selection tool built on LUCID™, a computer-based system created at CBIT, Australia. With this tool, agricultural researchers and extension officers can select, develop, and disseminate multipurpose forages for specific climates, soils, production systems, and management practices.

It can also be used as a training resource for workshops, universities, and schools.

Tropical Forages was a major collaborative effort between CSIRO, QDPI&F, and CBIT (all Australian institutions), CIAT, and ILRI. Significant financial and technical support was also received from ACIAR (Australia), BMZ and GTZ (both of Germany), DFID (UK), and FAO.
