Pasturas Tropicales (Journal)
The
lack of scientific journals with specialized arbitration and
broad and timely circulation is a major constraint to the
dissemination of results from agricultural and livestock research
in tropical Latin America. This limitation is even more notable
in the field of livestock production based on the grasses
and forages of tropical lowlands. Although, the region boasts
of a large number of titles on agricultural and livestock
themes, only a small percentage correspond to journals and
technical bulletins on animal production in general and, of
these, about 10 specialize in grasses and forages, with poor
international visibility being their common characteristic.

The Journal's Origins

The Spanish-language Revista Pasturas Tropicales appeared
in 1985 as a continuation of Pastos Tropicales-Boletín
Informativo, which began in 1979 as part of the dissemination
activities conducted by CIAT's Tropical Forages Program and
Communications Unit.
The journal was established in response to the need identified
by the International Tropical Pastures Evaluation Network
(RIEPT, its Spanish acronym) for a means to publish and discuss
results generated by research in different tropical ecosystems.
Initially, it received support from the International Development
Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada who financed its circulation
for the first 2 years. It was then supported by CIAT's Communications
Unit and Tropical Forages Program, COLCIENCIAS,
and researchers from the national institutions of different
countries who, through their contributions, helped maintain
the quality of information.

Journal Structure and Content
The journal's Editorial Committee categorizes the contributions
it receives according to previously established standards,
that is:
Scientific articles
These include research results that follow the scientific
method to reach significant conclusions of interest to the
field of tropical forages.
Research notes
These are partial results of scientific research or are
equally relevant findings from field and laboratory studies
on tropical forage production.
Observations, publications, and events
This section is available for opinions, and announcements
of events and publications.
Issue 3, volume 26 (2004), marked the publication of 545
documents (scientific articles and research notes) on 2730
printed pages, written by 680 authors and co-authors from
different national institutions of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia,
Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela, as
shown in the following table. (See

CD-ROM Pasturas Tropicales
United in one volume 1979-2002
The
introduction of new technologies for managing information
and accelerating the speed of communication networks facilitates
the evolution of media and services such as electronic publication.
These new formats thus permit the development of materials
like Pasturas Tropicales: Unidas en un Solo Volumen.
The CD-ROM compiles all the documents published in Revista
Pasturas Tropicales and its predecessor between 1979
and 2002 in a media supported by HTML under an index structure,
which permits consultation by year and issue of each volume,
or by author, species, or subject, linking with the referenced
articles, which are in PDF format.
We hope that, with this product and using new information
technologies, researchers and farmers will have a timely and
easily used medium for discovering the latest research findings
on the grasses and forages of the lowlands of tropical Latin
America.
