Working to improve policy and decision making for sustainable land and environmental management

For further information contact: Manuel Winograd

In recent years a world consensus has been reached on the need for sustainable development. In addition to a change of perspective about development, the concept of sustainable development implies new demands. One of these is the production of information, which plays a critical role, given that it provides the foundation for decision-making processes and development monitoring. Indicators represent important tools for communicating to different types of users, permitting the transformation of information into action. Nevertheless, initiatives for developing and utilizing indicators require tools that are easy to use and that permit access to useful information. This information must be appropriate to the elaboration of planning and monitoring strategies.

To respond to these demands, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in cooperation with the World Bank and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) developed the product “Rural Sustainability Indicators: A Vision for Central America.” The purpose of this product is to develop, evaluate and refine indices and indicators, and the tools for visualizing the information in an easy-to-use interface. The project also has the goal of using available information from government institutions and distributing all the data, indicators and tools to a large number of national institutions and users.

Given the demand for this product, and to facilitate access and diffusion, this web site and interface has been developed. All the indicators, data and documentation from the original CD can be downloaded. Users can also browse the data with an Internet map server application.
