Cassava is a crop that has largely been left behind by scientific plant breeding partly due to its status as an orphan crop with limited resources for research and development, its highly heterozygous nature, and its long reproductive cycle. Tools of genomics particularly molecular markers permit an immediate increase of efficiency in cassava breeding.

There are now a total of 7 MAS projects in 6 African countries and in Colombia, at CIAT. Experiences from the different projects are very invaluable given the limited number of research groups working in cassava hence the need for the creation of a network to share experiences and best practices.
