Nutrition Initiative
To contribute to our mission to reduce hunger and poverty and improve human health, researchers at CIAT fetch the full potential of the agriculture, food, and nutrition sciences. Thus the nutrition area seeks to:
-
explore and promote the role of beans, cassava, rice, and tropical fruits in addressing hunger, poverty, and health; and
-
evaluate the impact of CIAT’s research on hunger, nutrition, and health.
To achieve these objectives, we work with partners throughout the world, contributing program- and science-relevant knowledge and experiences to international development projects related to nutrition.
Research Areas
The Role of Staple Crops to Address Hunger, Poverty, and Malnutrition CIAT conducts basic research on beans, cassava, rice, and tropical fruits. In nutrition, the aim is to identify nutrients or bioactive compounds in these foods, understand their contributions to human health, and promote their consumption.
Impact Assessment CIAT and its partners disseminate and promote several food crops (beans, cassava, rice, and tropical fruits) and forages for animal feed. Through direct or indirect pathways, these crops can improve food and nutrition security. In nutrition, the aim is to evaluate these processes and impacts.
