| Social researchreferring here primarily
to sociology and anthropology rather than economicsoccupies
a rather small place in the large research agenda of the Future
Harvest centers supported by the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
In recent years various External Management and Program Reviews
of the centers and other important CGIAR documents have underscored
the need to strengthen such research and integrate it more closely
with biological and economics research. But only modest efforts
have been made to implement these recommendations. As the mission
of the CGIAR expands beyond food production to address poverty
reduction, social research will become increasingly important
for achieving impact.
