Topics
Institutional Experience with Social Research
Each CGIAR center is encouraged to present a paper on this topic.
Such a paper will analyze the contributions of social research (sociology,
anthropology, geography, political science, and psychology) to the research process in
agriculture or natural resource management (NRM). Discussion would include results,
outcomes, impact on development, and assessment of the extent to which social research has
influenced the relevance of research outcomes for the poor. Preference will be given to
papers that analyze experience over time and the impact of social research on the
agricultural and NRM research orientations of an organization such as a CGIAR Center,
National Agricultural Research Institute, or NGO, as distinct from a project. Because
these core papers should aim to inform conference participants of the track record so far
held by social research in the CGIAR, a suggested outline is given in the Appendix.
Methodological, qualitative, and quantitative "windows" for social
research in agriculture and natural resource management
Invited papers on this topic will describe and illustrate opportunities for one or more
methodological approaches from the social sciences. Examples are participatory action
research, modeling, quasi-experimental studies, long-term panel studies, interdisciplinary
approaches (biological and social sciences), and spatial analysis.
Future prospects, researchable topics, and entry points for social research in
agriculture and natural resource management
Invited papers will present a forward-looking argument on the future prospects of
social research making important contributions to agricultural and NRM research that is
aimed at poverty alleviation.
