Integrated Research and Development

For many resource-poor upland farmers, production systems can be quite basic and rudimentary due to lack of access to knowledge and technology about how to maximize resources and optimize system functionality. As a result, crop yields remain vulnerable to production constraints, resources are underutilized and markets go untapped, all in all detrimentally affecting a farmer's potential to generate an adequate income.

However, food security and income improvement can occur through the application of more sustainable production systems and the facilitation of mutually beneficial linkages between smallholder producers and environmentally progressive agroindustrial processors.

CIAT strives to develop more formal linkages between research and development activities through direct links and support to major development partners such as International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) investment projects.

Ongoing Projects

  • Linking smallholder livelihoods to emerging environmentally progressive agro-industrial markets.
